Grief is real, and finding ways to get through it is exhausting.
In November, my little Larry passed away. It happened so suddenly and out of nowhere, and we’re still feeling the sadness and heartbreak. Larry and I used to sit at my computer together and write, so whenever I thought about writing, I thought of him. That’s why I stopped writing.
But I never stopped thinking about Larry, so now I’m giving this old comforting habit another try. I hope I can keep it together. I need every keystroke to help me find a little peace. So far, so good.
I spoke too soon. My hands are shaking, tears are running down my face, and my breathing is uneven. Still, I need to get through this so I can start to heal and make writing feel separate from memories of my sweet Lar.
Over the last seven months—wow, it’s really been seven months, even though it feels like only two days—I’ve tried a lot of things to cope with his death. Some things helped, while others just made me feel weird, but I kept doing them because they made me laugh. Laughter and humor are like magic for my soul.
Here are the eight things I did that made me smile a little or helped me take my mind off Larry for a bit.
8 lighthearted ways to heal after losing someone
- Gossip! Spread gossip to your close friends and family. There is something about gossip that makes you laugh, and it strips the pain away.
- Eat tacos and cake for breakfast. Grief doesn’t follow a schedule, so you don’t have to either.
- Write a letter to someone you can’t stand and list all the reasons why. Tell them how ugly you think they and their whole family are, then rip it up. I laughed so hard when I did this—definitely a personal favorite!
- Buy some plants and talk to them like they can talk back. Tell them all your problems and worries. They’re great listeners and won’t tell anyone.
- Be dramatic like the Hollywood movie stars from the 1950s. Cry and throw yourself onto the bed or floor with all the drama. This one is also a personal favorite!
- Join a boxing class and “accidentally” hit your sparring partner in the face. You can only get away with this a few times before they catch on. I love this one too.
- Binge-watch all your favorite shows and comedy specials. It really does make your soul feel better.
- Give yourself a round of applause. Getting through the loss of someone you love is a real achievement.
Somehow, I feel a little better. I think I might be starting to feel like myself again. Who knows, maybe I’ll be back tomorrow.
You could have chosen any blog to read, but you chose mine, and I’m honored!

I had no idea, your blog just went quiet.
I’m very sorry for your loss. My condolences.
It would probably help if you wrote about it. I use my blog to talk about personal issues occasionally and it helps a lot.

Hey stranger.. keep your head up, things could be worse. I had heart surgery in febuary and came out with something called pump head which is similar to a tbi or Alzheimer’s. I dont have enough attention span to even write now let alone if i do it doesn’t make sense. I’ve been doing videos every once in a while when i remember to though.

Not much to say, i pulled through but apparently I didn’t come back completely whole. They don’t tell you that it happens sometimes. But thats another story. I haven’t written about it but i do eventually intend to get back to such things. I have posted to youtube quite a bit about it but i also seem to record videos and never get them posted.. smh its a thing i guess

I’m so sorry for your loss 😭 When my sweet Zoë passed away, I wrote a eulogy for her and shared a blog post celebrating her life. It helped me process the grief. My parents had to put her down the day after her 13th birthday.

I was just thinking about you the other day, wondering where you were.
I am saddened to read this, and I truly understand. Jernee has been gone since September of last year.
They’re your babies, such big parts of the family. I pray that you and your family will continue to enjoy the great memories you all have of him.
I am sending you tight hugs and positive energy. 🙏🏾🩵
