Falling asleep on the couch used to be my comfy go-to place. My couch and I were thick as thieves in my childhood, and as an adult, I sometimes venture into my living room, prop up a bunch of pillows, grab a bunch of blankets, and camp out for the night. I limit how often I do it because it ticks off my husband.

However, once I read about the sense of disconnection that can come from sleeping on the couch, I ran upstairs and snuggled under my husband like I used to.
It’s hard for me to fall asleep if I can’t feel my husband’s feet or the warmth of his body beside me, but there are times when I need to be alone with my thoughts. A few weeks ago, I realized that I was sleeping on the couch more than usual. My husband would make comments about it, telling me that once he noticed I was gone, it was hard for him to get back to sleep. Other times, he would express how upset he was to wake up and find me gone again.
One night, I was downstairs and happened to stumble across a TikTok video that left me a little speechless—it seemed like a perfect coincidence. After watching the video, I Googled, “Why is sleeping separately from your spouse harmful?”
Let me tell you, after I finished my research, I ran to my bed and felt like burning my couch.
Here are the top 5 reasons why sleeping apart is harmful to your marriage
1. Emotional Distance Can Grow
Sharing a bed creates small daily moments of connection — talking before sleep, cuddling, physical closeness. When that disappears, couples may slowly feel less emotionally connected.
2. Reduced Physical Intimacy
Physical touch (even just holding hands or casual contact) releases bonding hormones like oxytocin. Sleeping separately can reduce spontaneous affection and intimacy.
3. Avoiding Instead of Resolving Issues
Sometimes couples sleep apart after arguments or ongoing tension. If separation becomes a way to avoid conflict rather than address it, the underlying issues can worsen.
4. Symbolic Meaning
For some people, sharing a bed represents unity. Moving to separate spaces can feel like a sign of relationship trouble — even if that wasn’t the intention.
5. Communication Can Decrease
Bedtime is often when couples talk without distractions. Losing that shared time can reduce meaningful conversations.
My next few posts will touch on all five of the reasons why sleeping apart is harmful to your marriage.

What an honest and relatable reflection. Sometimes we seek a space to think, but we forget that sharing a bed is also a small daily ritual of connection. I liked how you approached the topic from experience rather than judgment. It certainly invites reflection on those details that strengthen a relationship.

Yes, we have felt those things to, so u had to get something that would let me stay in bed even though he sometimes snores like a train! Besides, in the three years we were on the road, I had no where else to go! So I think we are God now thanks to sleep gummies!

You are right, Bella, but I still understand it. A couch with many cushions is like a doggie basket for humans.

In forty years I’ve slept on the couch a handful of times when I was fuming over an argument. It’s very uncommon. I prefer to sleep next to my husband. You list so many good reasons why. Love this. Hugs, C
